Thanks eureka prince, I think that might be it.

My filter is brand-new, as is the vacuum itself. The more I use it the more I believe that the heat is normal because all the air is squirted out of that small area. Not sure about the dust, though. I'll have to monitor it longer.

I was wondering if anyone has this Miele Home Care vacuum and is troubled by heating. The area around the HEPA filter cover seems to get unusually hot during operation and stays quite warm for some time after the vacuum is turned off. Also, the air blowing out of the dust filter compartment...
